Leg Extension

Leg Extension is a isolation knee extension exercise for the quads. Use a controlled range that keeps the target muscles loaded and the joints comfortable.

Set up

  1. 1Adjust the seat and pads before loading the working weight.
  2. 2Match the machine pivot to the joint being trained whenever a pivot marker is present.
  3. 3Align the knee joint with the machine pivot and place the pad above the ankle.
  4. 4Set the back pad so the hips remain firmly against the seat.

How to perform it

  1. 1Extend the knees smoothly until the quads are fully shortened.
  2. 2Pause without snapping into lockout.
  3. 3Lower through the available range for a deep quad stretch.
  4. 4Keep the hips down throughout.

Breathing

Exhale through the effort or shortened position; inhale during the controlled return. Keep the trunk quietly braced.

Technique cues

  1. Lift with the quads
  2. Smooth squeeze at the top
  3. Lower for two seconds

Common mistakes

  1. Misaligning the knee and machine pivot
  2. Kicking the weight up
  3. Hips lifting from the seat
