Arnold Press

Arnold Press is a compound vertical push exercise for the shoulders. Use a controlled range that keeps the target muscles loaded and the joints comfortable.

Set up

  1. 1Clear a safe path for picking up and setting down the dumbbells.
  2. 2Use a controlled kick-up or a spotter for heavy pressing variations.
  3. 3Set the seat or stance so the hands start just below ear level.
  4. 4Brace the trunk and keep the forearms close to vertical.

How to perform it

  1. 1Inhale and create a stable ribcage before pressing.
  2. 2Drive the handles or weights upward without leaning back.
  3. 3Finish with the arms overhead while keeping the shoulders controlled.
  4. 4Lower smoothly to a comfortable depth.

Breathing

Inhale and brace before the lowering phase, then exhale gradually through the hardest part of the repetition without losing trunk position.

  1. Stack wrists over elbows
  2. Keep ribs down
  3. Reach up without shrugging aggressively

Common mistakes

  1. Turning the press into an incline press
  2. Flaring the elbows excessively
  3. Crashing into the bottom position
