Set up

  1. 1Adjust the seat and pads before loading the working weight.
  2. 2Match the machine pivot to the joint being trained whenever a pivot marker is present.
  3. 3Align the handles near chest height and keep a soft, fixed bend in the elbows.
  4. 4Set the shoulder blades gently back without forcing an exaggerated arch.

How to perform it

  1. 1Open the arms until the chest is comfortably stretched.
  2. 2Sweep the arms together in a wide hugging arc.
  3. 3Pause when the hands or pads meet without rounding the shoulders.
  4. 4Return slowly along the same arc.

Breathing

Exhale through the effort or shortened position; inhale during the controlled return. Keep the trunk quietly braced.

Technique cues

  1. Hug a wide barrel
  2. Move from the shoulder, not the elbow
  3. Keep tension at the finish

Common mistakes

  1. Turning the movement into a press
  2. Overstretching the front of the shoulder
  3. Using a load that forces momentum
